RULES FOR CLUB TOURNAMENTS
Player availability helps make the tournament run smoother and on time. Tournament schedules will be strictly enforced during the early rounds of play.
Player availability helps make the tournament run smoother and on time. Tournament schedules will be strictly enforced during the early rounds of play.
- Unless otherwise stated by the Director, all R1 tournament matches start on the Sunday or Monday of the announced week. The tournament match starting time is 5:15 pm, with a five-minute warm-up. Players are responsible for contacting opponents to arrange or confirm match dates/times. There will be a 30-minute grace period before default. Participants may play before the allotted date/time by mutual agreement.
- Players/Teams should expect to be available to play at least two times per week and must complete each tournament round roughly within three days. Tournament matches are to be played Monday through Friday, though Players/Teams are encouraged to play tournament matches on weekends if all players are available. Players are responsible for playing by the following schedule: R1 by Wednesday, R2 by Friday, R3 by Wednesday, R4 by Friday, and so on. Tournament final matches should be played within two weeks of the last semifinal match. If a match is not completed within the allotted time, one or both players/teams may be defaulted, depending on the circumstances. The Tennis Committee does not consider any of the following to be legitimate reasons for postponing a scheduled match:
- That a player has a practice hit or match already scheduled
- That a player has a scheduled match in a non-Idle Hour event such as a USTA league match or USTA or UTR tournament match
- That a player has vacation-related or other social plans
- All matches are governed by USTA codes of conduct.
- Except for the age-based events mentioned below, singles & doubles matches are regular scoring and two out of three full sets unless all participants agree to a 10-point match super-tiebreaker in lieu of a full third set. Starting at age 60, the 3rd set of all age-based tournaments will be decided by a 10-point super-tiebreaker unless all participants agree to a full 3rd set. However, the finals of the men’s 60s singles & doubles will be a full 3rd set unless all participants agree to a 10-point super-tiebreaker. The format of the 3rd set must be decided BEFORE the match starts.
- Semi-final and final matches should use scorecards and should be played on front courts that are close to the porch so that other club members may watch (e.g., Courts 4, 3, or 5). (Players/teams with last names earliest in the alphabet should use the white background scorecard.)
- Participants supply balls for the match with the losing player/team giving their balls to the winners for the next match. The club supplies the balls for the finals.
- Court priority will be given to tournament play over normal member play. “A” level tournaments have scheduling priority over all other tournaments.
- Winners, please record the match score neatly on the draw sheet, below the winner’s name
- Alternate singles players, doubles partners, or doubles teams may permanently substitute for players in the draw only if they do so before the R1 match and do not unfairly alter tournament seeding, as per the judgment of the Director.
- Refer all questions to the Tournament Director.
